SPECIAL COMMUNITY EVENT:

Friday, February 6, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the California State Capitol
“A Courage of Poets” Poetry Activation Organized by Sixteen Rivers Press

Friday, February 6, 2026, is the one-month anniversary of Renée Good's killing by ICE.
Join with fellow poets and supporters from 10 a.m. to 2 p. m. on the west side of the California State Capitol in Sacramento in solidarity with 300 + California poets and writers: young, old, famous, obscure, the California poet laureate, county laureates, teen laureates, slam poets, spoken-word artists, writers, and friends.
We will participate in a collective poem. Linking hands, poets and writers will offer out loud, one after the other, two to three lines of poetry in remembrance and in honor of Renée Good, Keith Porter Jr., Silverio Villegas González, Alex Pretti, and other individuals, often invisible to the media and the public, who've been killed on the streets by ICE or in ICE custody.
The lines the poets and writers speak will be of their own choosing — their own or someone else’s — addressing grief, kindness, rage, resilience, despair, hope, joy, and ideas that champion diversity, racial justice, the environment, free speech, and the Constitution: ideals we purport to hold dear in a democracy. We are called to hold this event because as poets and writers, we feel kindred to Renée Good, since she, too, was a poet.
Sometime during the gathering (time to be determined), in an expression of grief and anguish, the poets and writers will sound a 15-second “barbaric yawp” taken from Walt Whitman, whose famous line “I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world” is found in his profoundly American poem, “Song of Myself.”
The event will culminate with California Poet Laureate Lee Herrick offering a final poem, after which the gathering will disband, energized and inspired to engage in continued peaceful acts of resistance.
